THE PROCESS
CONCEPT: One can think of each project as an Underground Railroad that crosses the border of language. It is a system of tunnels that doesn't believe in the barriers of countries or in the obstruction of segregated tongues. This site is a metaphorical "dig" between artists around the world.
PLATFORM: Here, artists are able to upload audio, video, and image files. Each artist then has the opportunity to post their work as a new medium for other artists to manipulate and respond to, or to protect the work so that it can only be viewed as inspiration. The 'tunnel' is collaborative in nature, acting as a virtual performance, art and installation lab.
EXHIBITION / PERFORMANCE: From this virtual laboratory a final exhibition is produced. This includes time on the ground in each country with the artist involved.
THE GOLDEN THREAD: Director and Curator, Tavia La Follette choses current affair topics and ecologically minded artists to interact with on these projects. Sites of Passage is interested in taking the discussions away from political perspectives and examining them through a global citizens lens.
As the world is evolving and as the project title (Sites of Passage) alludes to, La Follette asked these artists to take a Rite of Passage towards a world that does not build walls, define borders and where everyone is a citizen with the power to create change.
