FIREFLY TUNNELS
Sites of Passage began as a research proposal for Tavia La Follette's PhD in Leadership & Change at
Antioch University under the name Firefly Tunnels. The work revolved around Firefly Insight, which is the
process of exercising the phenomena of aesthetic meaning through experienced metaphor, rather than
modern day rhetoric. The Firefly Tunnel Project was an exchange between 36 artists in the U.S. and Egypt.
The work's final exposé was mounted at the Mattress Factory Museum of Contemporary Art (Pittsburgh, Pa),
one of the only installation and performance art museums of its kind. Opening on September 11, 2011, as
part of the 10th Anniversary of 9/11, the show ran for more than 6 months continuously. The Firefly Tunnels
exhibition included a live virtual gallery exchange, physical installations, a performance series schedule,
as well as curatorial tours and community programming / outreach.
The project has since matured into what is now known as Sites of Passage.
